 "DIABETES -- An Acronym"  

Contestants will research the causes, treatments, side effects and prevention strategies of Type II diabetes and develop an acronym using the word DIABETES. This acronym will help promote the understanding, prevention and treatment of the disease with a particular focus on the application of the acronym to their peers.  Additionally, an explanation of each topic of the acronym should be fully developed throughout the essay.

Grand Prize - International Grand Prize Winner receives a trip to the award ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations (subject to change).  At the ceremony he/she will receive a cash award of US$5,000 (or local equivalent) and an engraved plaque.  Two Family members (one being the winner's parent or legal guardian) and the sponsoring Lions club president or a club member (as designated by the club president) will accompany the winner to the award ceremony.  The award ceremony is scheduled for March.

Program Overview

The Lions Young Leaders in Service Awards are sponsored by local Lions clubs. Clubs may recognize as many young people as they find eligible. Here is an overview of the awards program.

The Lions club invites local schools, Leo clubs and other youth groups to participate and distributes program materials.

The Lions award chairman coordinates with school personnel, Leo advisors and adult youth group leaders, who certify young peoples service and submit award forms to the Lions club.

The award chairman requests awards from Lions Clubs International.

Lions Clubs International issues a congratulatory letter from the International President and a certificate for each recipient.

The Lions club arranges an award presentation for youth recipients.
